The five members of the Cube Works art group, based in Toronto, spent two months making the mosaic, which measures 8.5 ft (260cm) by 17 ft (520cm). The Rubik’s cube replica of the 15th century mural, which is painted on the back wall of the dining hall at Santa Maria delle Grazie, a church in Milan, is thought to be the largest work of its kind. Harnessing bees to detect bombs

Nice work honey. Sent to you via Google Reader Harnessing bees to detect bombs What do you do when you can’t make robotic systems sensitive enough to detect faint traces of an unknown explosive? Normally, one would train dogs, but apparently this takes many months, and many treats. Inscentinel has a different solution- why not use bees instead? They claim that within a few hours, they can train a whole crop of bees to sniff out and react to a different kinds of scent, and then the bees are released back to their hive at the end of their shift. Maybe someday, they will team up with the people who are creating remote-controlled beetles, in order to create an army of sensor insects to fly around and monitor everything. Which might be ok, as long as they don’t sting me for not doing my laundry. [via neatorama] Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in Biology | Digg this! Regards, Colin.

Rumor: Six-Core Mac Pro Lands 2010

Enough said. Sent to you via Google Reader Rumor: Six-Core Mac Pro Lands 2010 Rumor has it that Apple’s next-generation Mac Pro will feature Intel’s elite desktop chip codenamed Gulftown, according to a blog. Recently demonstrated by Intel, Gulftown is a six-core, dual-socket processor with 12 threads. (In normal human speak, it’s essentially a processor with six brains, capable of efficiently distributing power to execute 12 concurrent tasks.) Apple blog Hardmac claims receiving a tip that the Gulftown-equipped Mac Pro could arrive early 2010. A highly threadable processor such as Gulftown would be most useful for prosumer applications, such as video editing and encoding. Apple’s latest operating system Snow Leopard was specially designed for efficient multithread processing. Therefore, for regular consumers who don’t use their Macs for very processor-heavy tasks, this rumor about Gulftown won’t sound all that exciting. But inevitable price cuts for current Mac Pros, which carry quad-core processors, might be something to look forward to. Heya Tumblr.
Tis been a while.
Broadband promised to unite the world with super-fast data delivery - but in South Africa it seems the web is still no faster than a humble pigeon. A Durban IT company pitted an 11-month-old bird armed with a 4GB memory stick against the ADSL service from the country’s biggest web firm, Telkom. Winston the pigeon took two hours to carry the data 60 miles - in the same time the ADSL had sent 4% of the data. (via BBC NEWS | Africa | SA pigeon ‘faster than broadband )
